In the words of its Creator, Nikole Hannah-Jones, “The 1619 Project is answering that question every Black person gets, which is ‘Slavery was a long time ago—why don’t you get over it?’ ” Before taking on this important project, we asked ourselves if we were the right people to help introduce this story to a wider audience.
